Our event opens with our first clinic where you'll get scrubbed up into full PPE. We will begin with introducing three patients that have been involved in a road traffic collision (RTC). Once we've been through the paramedic handover we'll triage the patients injuries before beginning preparation for theatre.
Our preparation begins with a full overview of microorganisms, especially those that are pathogenic -in particular, Staphylococcus Aureus.
We will understand the mechanism of action that leads to cellular destruction of the vasculature caused by toxins secreted by bacteria. We will also learn how a patient may develop such infection and what happens when a patient develops Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome (SIRS). SIRS very quickly leads to Septic Shock which if not treated can have catastrophic and even fatal consequences.
In this session you'll undertake the complete pre-surgical infection control procedure on your patient, using iodine based antimicrobials. Once completely sterile the patient will be gowned and draped using real surgical drapes before we move to clinic two -anaesthetics.
